About the Producer

The Masi family has been making wine for three generations. It currently produces a wide range of wines (white, rose, red and dessert) from a variety of grapes all of which come from vineyards owned by the family in Rufina ("Fattoria di Basciano") and from other long-established vineyards situated around Rufina (except for the "Bianco Vergine Valdichiana"). Currently, Paolo Masi carries out the family's philosophy of producing excellent quality/price related wines. Paolo emphasizes the long term relationship of cooperation with each grower. He consults with them in the vineyard to obtain the highest quality and will pay higher prices for lower yields in the interest of better wine.

Renzo Masi's Chianti is made from a combination of estate fruit and purchased fruit from the Rufina district, one of the best areas of Chianti. It is produced for early drinkability but can also be cellared for a few years.

Equal parts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.

The three varieties are fermented separately and left to macerate in contact with the skins for 25 days. The wines are then assembled into the final blend before going into barrel.

I Pini completes its malolactic fermentation in the weeks following the racking and is then aged in oak barrels for about 14 months. Before its release, it matures in bottles for at least six months.

Tasting Notes

Deep black cherry red with purple hues. Intense, elegant whiffs of violets and small dark, wild forest fruits such as black currant, bilberries and blackberries. On the palate it displays a flawless integration of ripe, mineral, fruity flavours against the backdrop of a spicy but silky and refined texture.

13.5% alcohol, 4.7 gr/l reducing sugars, pH 3.5 , 5.6 gr/l total acidity.

Food Suggestions

I Pini represents a perfect match for any grilled meats such as Steak Fiorentina, game stews and seasoned cheeses. It will also pair very well with rich pasta dishes and should finally be gently and meditatively sipped at the end of supper.

Serving temperature: 18°C.

Although ready to drink, the wine will reach its optimum in 2-3 years’ time and I Pini will continue to improve for at least another 10 years.
