About the Producer

Elena Walch is a leading, family-run Alto Adige wine estate, which belongs to a restricted elite of forward-looking, quality-inspired Italian wine producers. Encouraging quality and innovation, Elena Walch has stood at the head of the Alto Adige quality revolution and gained local and international esteem for her efforts. An architect by trade, Elena Walch married into one of the oldest and most significant wine families of the region and brought new, modern concepts to the traditional establishment. Now, the responsibility for the family business is being put into the hands of the daughters, Julia and Karoline Walch, already the fifth generation.

The philosophy of the estate is centred on the idea that wines must be the individual expression of their soil, climate and cultivation in the vineyard and that this must be maintained according to principles of sustainability and passed on to the next generation. This requires uncompromising work, taking into account the individuality of each vineyard.

The wines show character, elegance and great personality, reflecting the most professional winemaking. The superb climatic conditions and the excellent location of the vineyards produce fresh and fruity white wines as well as concentrated and velvety red wines.

Vineyard

Elena Walch has 60 hectares of land under cultivation, including the two top vineyards VIGNA Castel Ringberg in Caldaro and VIGNA Kastelaz in Tramin. The grapes are produced in the village of Pinzon located above the village of Montan, at 550 - 600 m. above sea level, south west facing. Chalky soil.

Vinification

Traditional fermentation, partially in large Slovenia oak vats, partially in stainless steel tanks.

Ageing

Malolactic fermentation follows and the final wine matures in French oak barrels for 16 months.

Tasting Notes

Brilliant ruby red. After initial subtle overtones of ripe fruits such as sweet cherries and plums as well as spicy notes of cinnamon and cloves, the bouquet opens up elegantly and harmoniously, multi-layered, complex and inviting. On the palate, the Elena Walch Pinot Noir Ludwig captivates through its elegance, pleasingly soft tannins, filigreed structure, discreet spiciness, and a profoundly refined interplay of aromas, juiciness and minerality against a backdrop of black cherry, blackberry fruit and delicate accents of dried thyme, anise and iron. The finish is invitingly fresh and long.

Elena Walch Pinot Noir Ludwig is a full-flavoured wine, ideal for pairing with savoury dishes such as venison, game, red meat or mature cheeses.

Serving temperature: 16-18°C.

Cellar

Up to 8 years in bottles stored horizontally in cool dark conditions. Elena Walch Pinot Noir Ludwig will develop from medium bottle ageing.
