About the Producer

In 1859 the French company Savignon Frères et Cie settled in Haro and founded the winery. In 1901, once the phylloxera problem had been eradicated from French vineyards, a group of businessmen from La Rioja and Bilbao purchased the property and founded Bodegas Bilbaínas. Bodegas Bilbaínas is the first and oldest bottling winery in the DO Rioja. In 1997, the Codorníu Group acquired Bodegas Bilbaínas maintaining the philosophy on which it was originally based, that is, to produce wines from specific vines from its own property, thereby assuring wines with personality, called “Vinos de Finca” (“Estate” wines) or “Vinos de Pago” (a term used to describe wines that are produced in microclimates, or in particular, localised soil conditions). Bodegas Bilbaínas today is one of the most prestigious wineries in the Rioja region, specialising in wines in the Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva categories.


The Viña Pomal estate spans 90 hectares of vineyards nestled within Haro, less than 2 kilometres from the winery. Situated in one of the town's picturesque locales, it boasts stunning vistas of the Ebro River meandering through the "Conchas de Haro" passage.

This expansive estate features diverse ecosystems, each with unique soils and sun exposure levels. This necessitates meticulous zoning for consistent quality. Marrying traditional Rioja methods with cutting-edge winegrowing techniques, Bodegas Bilbaínas prioritizes environmentally sustainable practices to yield premium wines. Additionally, it meticulously curates grapes from esteemed suppliers in Rioja Alta to complement its estate's produce.


Viña Pomal Rioja Reserva distinguishes itself through a classically-inspired vinification process. This includes meticulous destemming and crushing, followed by a carefully managed maceration period of moderate length. Post-fermentation, both alcoholic and malolactic, the wine undergoes racking and a gentle fining process before embarking on its barrel aging journey.


The wine matures for 18 months in American oak barrels, with 20% being new. Throughout this duration, it undergoes three rackings, facilitating a natural fining process and eliminating the necessity for additional treatments. Following its barrel maturation, the wine ages for a minimum of two years in the bottle before its release to the market.

Tasting Notes

Viña Pomal Rioja Reserva presents itself with a profound, dark-cherry red hue, accented by a bright ruby-red rim. Upon nosing, it exhibits intensity and elegance and the bouquet reveals captivating floral notes intertwined with vibrant red berries, harmonized by subtle hints of sweet spices like vanilla, and enriched by nuances of roasted coffee. On the palate it is impressively persistent, reflecting the hallmark balance synonymous with exceptional Riojas.

Additionally, it complements hearty dishes like paella or casseroles, as well as aged cheeses, providing a delightful contrast with its fruity and spicy notes. Lastly, it can be enjoyed with Spanish tapas like chorizo or “patatas bravas”, accentuating the richness of these savoury bites.
