About the Producer

Rocca delle Macìe was established in 1973, when Italo Zingarelli – producer of Ettore Scola’s “We All Loved Each Other So Much”, and also of the wildly popular series of films featuring comedy duo Bud Spencer and Terence Hill (including “They Call Me Trinity” and “Trinity Is Still My Name”) – decided to realize his lifelong dream by acquiring the “Le Macìe” estate – extending across 93 hectares (230 acres) in all, of which only two were under vine – in order to create a winery in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone.

Love and passion for the Tuscan land were handed on from Italo to his sons Sergio and Fabio and to his daughter Sandra. In 1985, Sergio, Italo’s youngest son, took charge of worldwide distribution and in 1989, with wife Daniela at his side, was appointed Company President.

Since then Sergio’s vision, long term business strategy and determination to strive for the highest quality have – with the cooperation of sister Sandra – seen the paternal company consolidate and develop to achieve worldwide recognition, thanks also to the many prizes and acknowledgements received for its wines.

Vineyard

The company estate now extends over more than 500 hectares (1,250 acres) with, in total, more than 200 hectares (500 acres) of dedicated vineyards and 22 (54 acres) of olive groves, subdivided across the company’s six estates: Le Macìe, Sant’Alfonso, Fizzano e le Tavolelle in the Chianti Classico area (all in the Municipality of Castellina in Chianti in the South-West area of the Chianti Classico territory), in addition to the Campomaccione and Casa Maria estates in the Morellino di Scansano Area (Maremma).

The highest expression of Rocca delle Macìe winemaking, the Gran Selezione Sergio Zingarelli has a history that stretches way back in time to the year 2000: it represents the fruit of many years’ work in the vineyards at the Le Macìe estate at Castellina in Chianti, where the Sangiovese grape comes into its own like nowhere else. This wine encapsulates the very best of the Chianti Classico production zone and its vineyards, as well as the painstaking efforts of everyone involved.

The grapes for this wine are selected by hand within the best vineyard of Le Macìe estate in Castellina in Chianti, “Le Terrazze Vineyard”.
Average altitude: 1180 - 872 feet above sea level. The soil type is Miocene deposits very calcareous marls with an alkaline clayey-sandy texture.

Vinification

To produce the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione the most typical indigenous varieties of the Chianti Classico zone (90% Sangiovese, 10% Colorino) were chosen with the aim of expressing the best of their potential and of the terroir where they come from.

Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Sergio Zingarelli is fermented using the most advanced techniques to preserve the grapes’ natural concentration and, after 10 days of alcoholic fermentation, the must goes through 15 days maceration before being a transferred into wooden barrels for the malolactic fermentation.

Ageing

After completing the malolactic fermentation, the wine matures in French barriques from the Tronçais region for about 18 months. It then refines for another year in the bottle before being released.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby-red. Aromas of underbrush, toast, French oak, blue flower and a whiff of culinary spice slowly take shape. On the palate, taut, velvety tannins provide a firm, polished framework for flavours of sour cherry, cassis, liquorice and espresso. Classy, very long lasting finish.

Analysis

14% alcohol volume.
