About the Producer

The “Azienda Agricola Ciccio Zaccagnini” was founded in 1978 and today produces approximately 1,200,000 bottles per year. Under the guidance of its winemaker, Concezio Marulli, the company applies the most up-to-date wine-making technologies and implements a total quality control system throughout the entire production process.

The history of the Zaccagnini vinery is rooted in the passionate relationship between man and nature, wine and arts, celebrated year after year, in November, with “Uvarte”.

Famous artists are invited and dedicate a label to the winery. These labels are part of a collection line.

Vineyard

The 500 acres of the estate of Ciccio Zaccagnini is located in Bolognano, alongside the Rome-Pescara highway, in the province of Pescara. It is situated approximately 30 miles from the coast and about 8 miles from the Maiella Mountain which rises to 2,700 metres a.s.l.

Vinification

Soft grape pressing, submerged-cap maceration with controlled temperature fermentation and first racking when set parameters are reached.

Ageing

Zaccagnini Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is allowed to mature first in stainless steel tanks and then, for about 4 months, in barrels of Slavonian oak before bottling. After bottling, the wine is allowed to rest for some time and is then released during the second year from date of vintage.

Tasting Notes

Intense violet robe. Aromas of plums and ripe blackberry. On the palate, it shows clear breed: each sip delivers a mouthful of ripe berries, leather and black pepper with subtle hints of oregano, dried herbs, and a touch of vanilla. It is full-bodied and robust, with a perfect integration of tannins and wood, all leading to a dry, supple finish.

Analysis

12.5% alcohol volume.

Food Suggestions

Venison or rabbit stew; Ossobuco; roast leg of lamb; spaghetti “puttanesca”; pasta with sausage, pepper and onions; roast duck with green peppercorn sauce. Excellent also with fresh and seasoned cheeses.

Serving temperature 16-18°C.

Cellar

Zaccagnini Montepulciano d'Abruzzo will evolve and gain complexity over a period of about 3 years.

Zaccagnini Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2019

I am a big fan of this open and undemanding wine - good with solid winter foods - pastas and cheeses - very smooth with good balance and for a modern wine not overly alcoholic - from memory c.12.5%. Enjoy!

Zaccagnini Montepulciano d'Abruzzo - Tasting Comments

The wine is lovely. Medium body and very smooth tannin. The wine is drinking very well now. Lovely fruit and beautiful balance of tannin, acid and fruit.

Superb Italian Wine

Have purchased this wine on a number of occasions. Always very good. Well balanced and smooth. This particular vintage (2014) is maybe just not as good as the previous one (2013), of which I still have a few bottles.

A fine wine

I have reviewed this wine twice before. An outstanding wine with subtle complexities. However the earlier vintages were somewhat better. 2013 exceptionally so.
