About the Producer

The Mastroberardino family has been dipped in the world and culture of winemaking for about three centuries. The most authoritative reports suggest that one Berardino, taking the professional title 'Mastro' - master craftsman - began the lineage in the 1700’s. He established the winery’s headquarters in Atripalda in the heart of the Irpinia winemaking region and, since then, ten generations have run the business, seeing periods of both expansion and contraction, recurring circumstances in the history of family businesses of ancient origin.

The family estates are all located in Irpinia, in the heart of the production areas of three DOCGs: Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino, Taurasi. They are distributed in several areas in order to preserve the identity of the local varieties and vineyards, as well as ensuring their preservation and enhancement both in Italy and throughout the world.

The family, in fact, has always paid great attention to the safeguard and promotion of local grape varieties such as Aglianico, Fiano, Greco, Falanghina, Piedirosso, and Coda di Volpe, all dating back to Greek and Roman times.

While their survival from the ravages of phylloxera and World War II was ensured through the indefatigable work of Antonio Mastroberardino, today the guide of the family business is entrusted to Piero Mastroberardino, an accomplished and modern entrepreneur as well as Professor of Business Management at the University and writer of several works of narrative and poetry. Since May 2015 he is president of the Institute of the Italian Quality Wine “Grandi Marchi”.

Vineyard

The grapes are grown at Mirabella Eclano, an estate where – after a careful selection and recovery of ancient Aglianico clones from hundred years old, ungrafted vineyards - two biotypes identified by the name of Antonio Mastroberardino were propagated. These selected clones confirm distinctive characteristics: medium to small clusters, medium berries, thick skin and low fertility.

The vineyard is positioned at an altitude of 400 metres a.s.l, facing south-west. The soil is deep, with sandy, well-drained top soil and deep layers of clay and limestone. Planting density is 5,000 vines/ha with a yield of about 5 tons/ha and about 1 kg/plant.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested by hand around the end of October. A traditional vinification follows with long maceration on the skins in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks.

Ageing

Aglianico Irpinia is kept for 12 months in French oak barrels and 6 months in the bottle before release.

Tasting Notes

Intense ruby red colour. Well-developed bouquet with hints red fruits, especially strawberries and raspberries, and spices such as vanilla, tobacco, cocoa and coffee. On the palate the taste is warm, enveloping, well-structured, long-lasting and remarkably supple.

Analysis

13.5% alcohol volume.

Food Suggestions

Aglianico Irpinia is best paired with cold meats and aged cheeses; pasta with meat sauce, mushrooms and truffles; red meats and grilled game, stewed or braised beef.

Serving temperature 18°C.

Cellar

Ready to drink. If properly cellared, this Aglianico Irpinia will develop and improve for over 30 years.

Aglianico

It took me back to Southern Italy which I know well. Saved me the airfare . Flavours forthright and good savoury acidity. It is very drinkable and goes very well with typical dishes from that area of Italy. Recommended.
