About the Producer

Elena Walch is a leading, family-run Alto Adige wine estate, which belongs to a restricted elite of forward-looking, quality-inspired Italian wine producers. Encouraging quality and innovation, Elena Walch has stood at the head of the Alto Adige quality revolution and gained local and international esteem for her efforts. An architect by trade, Elena Walch married into one of the oldest and most significant wine families of the region and brought new, modern concepts to the traditional establishment. Now, the responsibility for the family business is being put into the hands of the daughters, Julia and Karoline Walch, already the fifth generation.

The philosophy of the estate is centred on the idea that wines must be the individual expression of their soil, climate and cultivation in the vineyard and that this must be maintained according to principles of sustainability and passed on to the next generation. This requires uncompromising work, taking into account the individuality of each vineyard.

The wines show character, elegance and great personality, reflecting the most professional winemaking. The superb climatic conditions and the excellent location of the vineyards produce fresh and fruity white wines as well as concentrated and velvety red wines.

Vineyard

Named for the Renaissance castle built there by Habsburgs in 1620 and rising up from Lake Caldaro in alternating moderate and steep slopes, the Vigna “Castel Ringberg“ is a crown jewel of the region and a monopole for Elena Walch, from where many of her award-winning, mineral-driven wines emanate. The term “Vigna“ points to a precisely demarcated and cartographically recorded single vineyard. In addition to variable altitudes from 330 to 400 meters above sea level, Vigna “Castel Ringberg” also boasts a multiplicity of soils. The higher perches, climbing into the “Mendel” ridge of the Dolomites, are of 30,000 year old glacial Adige River gravel, while calcareous soils with morainic substrata join loose limestone in gentler lower zones. The entire area receives the moderating influence of the lake and the strong afternoon drying southerly wind known as “Ora”, both contributing to the production of wines that are balanced, elegant and rich in character.

Vinification

Elena Walch Lagrein Riserva Castel Ringberg is vinified in traditional temperature controlled fermentation of about 10 days in stainless steel tanks.

Ageing

Malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks and then maturation follows for 20 months in French oak barrels. Finally, the wine is bottle aged for several months before being released.

Tasting Notes

Deep garnet hue. On the nose, Elena Walch Lagrein Riserva Castel Ringberg's expressive ripe black raspberry and black cherry fruit, fragrant sage, dark chocolate, earth and smoke, all set in a restrained and well-knit frame. On the palate, powerful with plenty of structure and a subtle sense of tension, with cassis and black liquorice notes which tail off toward a lingering smoke-and olive-laced finish.

Food Suggestions

Excellent with rich and spicy appetizers of cold cuts and seasoned cheeses. Elena Walch Lagrein Riserva Castel Ringberg pairs well with first course dishes with meat sauce, Lasagne, venison stew, braised veal cheek, Flank Steak, Shepherd’s Pie and Greek Lamb Gyros (pita bread stuffed with shavings of lamb meat and seasoned with salt, pepper, sweet paprika and oregano).

Serving temperature: 16-18°C.

Cellar

10 years and more in bottles stored horizontally in cool dark conditions, Elena Walch Lagrein Riserva Castel Ringberg will retain great character.
