Grapes

100% Aglianico.

In the two thousand year history of the Aglianico grape, Taurasi, the wine of the 'vigne opime' of old Taurasia mentioned by Livy, has a special place. This wine has seen an astonishing series of vintages which have charmed with their style and personality. “Radici”, which was produced for the first time in 1986, is the result of painstaking research into exposure, “terroir” chemical and physical characteristics and topography. Its strong personality, dense structure, and aromatic concentration are the primary features of this prestigious symbol of Irpinian viticulture.

About the Producer

The Mastroberardino family has been dipped in the world and culture of winemaking for about three centuries. The most authoritative reports suggest that one Berardino, taking the professional title 'Mastro' - master craftsman - began the lineage in the 1700’s. He established the winery’s headquarters in Atripalda in the heart of the Irpinia winemaking region and, since then, ten generations have run the business, seeing periods of both expansion and contraction, recurring circumstances in the history of family businesses of ancient origin.

The family estates are all located in Irpinia, in the heart of the production areas of three DOCGs: Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino, Taurasi. They are distributed in several areas in order to preserve the identity of the local varieties and vineyards, as well as ensuring their preservation and enhancement both in Italy and throughout the world.

The family, in fact, has always paid great attention to the safeguard and promotion of local grape varieties such as Aglianico, Fiano, Greco, Falanghina, Piedirosso, and Coda di Volpe, all dating back to Greek and Roman times.

While their survival from the ravages of phylloxera and World War II was ensured through the indefatigable work of Antonio Mastroberardino, today the guide of the family business is entrusted to Piero Mastroberardino, an accomplished and modern entrepreneur as well as Professor of Business Management at the University and writer of several works of narrative and poetry. Since May 2015 he is president of the Institute of the Italian Quality Wine “Grandi Marchi”.

Vineyard

The vineyards are situated in the Montemarano area on south-east facing clay soils and in Mirabella Eclano on south-west facing, well-drained sandy soils. Guyot/cordon spur training system. The vines are situated at an altitude of approximately 450m a.s.l. with a density of 4,000 vines per hectare. Harvesting takes place in late October-early November. Yield per hectare is about 5 tons/ha.

The area of Irpinia is influenced both by the Vesuvius volcano and by the area's temperate climate, which is ideal for the cultivation of the great Irpinia wines.

The Mastroberardino family's holdings are spread across several parts of Irpinia, over areas which became firmly established as the production centres for the great wines of the region. In recognition of the role played in the protection of the Roman age viticultural and oenological heritage, the Head of the Pompei Archaeological Heritage Department has entrusted the family with the management of sites which were used as vineyards in the ancient city. The idea was to replant them with the same, historic vines which, then as now, epitomised the area's winemaking tradition.
