About the Producer

Sister and Brother Maria Iris and Claudio Tipa, always shared a deep passion for nature and great wines and have fulfilled their dream by creating a “Domaine” in Tuscany.

The ColleMassari Domaine comprises four estates: Castello di ColleMassari since 1998, Grattamacco since 2002, Poggio di Sotto Estate since 2011 and Tenuta San Giorgio since 2016.

Grattamacco was founded in 1977 in the DOC area of Bolgheri where the growing of Cabernet Sauvignon has gained great popularity. The estate is situated on top of a hill facing the sea between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri, at 100 m a.s.l. The area is particularly dedicated to the production of great wines and enjoys a dry climate with consistent thermal excursions especially around the end of summer. The estate extends over an area of about 74 hectares, of which 27 are vineyards and 10 olive groves. The remaining area is forest and borders into a vast area of woodlands covering some 1,600 hectares.

65% Cabernet Sauvignon
20% Merlot
15% Sangiovese

The Grattamacco vineyards are situated in an ecological cradle, protected from the strong sea winds and covering 27 hectares. In the steep and rolling vineyards, with an average eight percent incline, vines are trained to Cordone speronato, to Guyot and to Alberello. Grattamacco Rosso Bolgheri is produced from vineyards at 100 m. a.s.l, where the soil is characterized by calcareous sandstone, marl and calcareous flysch mixed to clay. The climate is temperate Mediterranean with frequent sea breezes. A viticulture based on methods and principles totally respectful of the environment allows a spontaneous productive balance of about 7 tons of grapes per hectare, all hand-harvested and carefully selected from vineyards with an average age of 23 years.

The estate follows the criteria of organic farming, guaranteed and certified by ICEA. During harvest the grapes are carefully selected manually in the vineyards and placed in truncated cone-shaped oak vats holding 700 litres, where the open fermentation takes place naturally with soft manual punching- downs; a long maceration process takes place so as to slowly release fully ripe and noble tannins only.

Malolactic fermentation develops spontaneously in French oak barriques, keeping the different varieties separate. During the aging process in barriques, which lasts between 12 and 18 months, the blends are created, before a further bottle refinement of at least 6 months. This particular wine was aged for 18 months in oak barrels and then bottled in December 2016.

On the palate, it is concentrated, dense and impressive with a drive to cherry, currant and spicy flavours, while still remaining fresh, with terrific length and plenty of grip for ageing.
