About the Producer

Rocca delle Macìe was established in 1973, when Italo Zingarelli – producer of Ettore Scola’s “We All Loved Each Other So Much”, and also of the wildly popular series of films featuring comedy duo Bud Spencer and Terence Hill (including “They Call Me Trinity” and “Trinity Is Still My Name”) – decided to realize his lifelong dream by acquiring the “Le Macìe” estate – extending across 93 hectares (230 acres) in all, of which only two were under vine – in order to create a winery in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone.

Love and passion for the Tuscan land were handed on from Italo to his sons Sergio and Fabio and to his daughter Sandra. In 1985, Sergio, Italo’s youngest son, took charge of worldwide distribution and in 1989, with wife Daniela at his side, was appointed Company President.

Since then Sergio’s vision, long term business strategy and determination to strive for the highest quality have – with the cooperation of sister Sandra – seen the paternal company consolidate and develop to achieve worldwide recognition, thanks also to the many prizes and acknowledgements received for its wines.

Vineyard

The company estate now extends over more than 500 hectares (1,250 acres) with, in total, more than 200 hectares (500 acres) of dedicated vineyards and 22 (54 acres) of olive groves, subdivided across the company’s six estates: Le Macìe, Sant’Alfonso, Fizzano e le Tavolelle in the Chianti Classico area (all in the Municipality of Castellina in Chianti in the South-West area of the Chianti Classico territory), in addition to the Campomaccione and Casa Maria estates in the Morellino di Scansano Area (Maremma).

Locally renowned for the excellent exposure of its vineyards, Fizzano Farm was purchased in 1984 and consists of a “borgo” dating back from the 11th century and of about 61 hectares (150 acres), of which 35 hectares (88 acres) are dedicated to vineyards (Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Colorino) and 4.3 (11 acres) to olive groves. Average altitude: 985 - 623 feet above sea level. The soil type is Miocene deposits with a sandy-loamy texture, deep and calcareous.

Vinification

Chianti Classico Riserva di Fizzano Gran Selezione is fermented using the most advanced techniques to preserve the grapes’ natural concentration.

Ageing

After completing the fermentation, the wine matures for at least 2 years in 35hl French oak barrels, while a small proportion is aged in 225-litres barriques. It is then further refined in the bottle for a least one year.

Tasting Notes

Intense ruby-red. Layered, rich mineral bouquet of spicy red berries and underbrush notes with a hint of toast. The palate expands softly, offering dried black cherry, clove and mocha flavours, framed by assertive but polished tannins. Long, rewarding finish.

Analysis

14% alcohol volume.
