About the Producer

In 1968 Hugues Bernard Comte de la Gatinais, born in St. Malo in France in 1940 and for eight years an officer in the French navy, married Gigi Guarrasi, descendant of a great family of Palermo. With her he engaged in a passionate and courageous adventure: the reconstruction, along modern lines, of the cellar destroyed by an earthquake in the Belice Valley. The Comte de la Gatinais devoted the greatest care to the varietal and agronomic reorganisation of the vineyards. Already 30 years ago in Sicily the great French vine varieties were planted alongside the indigenous ones. Today, the work, started by Hugues de la Gatinais and his wife Gigi, has been now carried on by their son Laurent, with the same care and passion.

Grapes

100% Nero d'Avola

Vineyard

Selected parcels of vines cultivated at between 300 and 400 metres above sea level and trained by the Guyot system on clay soil with limited yields of grapes per hectare.

Vinification

The Nero d'Avola grapes, picked in mid-September are vinified separately on the skins in small stainless steel containers. Average to long macerations and controlled temperatures help giving this product a good structure.

Ageing

After the malolactic fermentation, the wine is allowed to rest and refine in the bottle before being released for sale.

Tasting Notes

Ruby red colour, with a bouquet reminiscent of plums, berries and with hints of dark chocolate and violets. On the palate, it displays meaty blackberry and minerality. Medium- to full-bodied, with good, solid tannins and a long finish.

Analysis

13% alcohol vol.

Food Suggestions

Poultry of all kinds (guinea fowl, duck, turkey etc.). Roast white meats and ripe cheeses.

Serving temperature: 18°C.

Cellar

Nero d'Avola is ready to drink and can be aged for 2-3 years.
