About the Producer

Rodolfo Sadler took his first steps at making wine 27 years ago. His decision to become a winemaker was partly influenced by the family's winemaking tradition and their passion for wine. As a little boy, he used to see his grandfather and father engaged in their winemaking tasks and always wished he could one day make his own wines of which to feel proud.

The wines of Mascota Vineyards are the outcome of that dream. They have Rodolfo’s (”Opi”) personal imprint and are a testimony of his life story and the demonstration that when passion and enthusiasm are poured into what one does, dreams will know no boundaries and international recognition will follow.

Grapes

100% Malbec

Vineyard

The vineyards lie at the foot of the Andes Mountains, barely a thousand meters away from the Mendoza River. The vines receive fresh breezes descending from the mountains and blowing along the river, all of which contributes to the generation of wide temperature ranges. The soil is predominantly alluvial, with a clay-loam surface, and rock is found at a depth of 60 cm (23.4 in). And so it is that Finca La Mascota finds itself set in perfect surroundings, and one the most renowned and prestigious wine-growing regions in Mendoza.

The vineyards cover 100 hectares of land, 97 of which are implanted with grapes. The main varieties produced are Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Shiraz among the reds; and Chardonnay among the whites. The oldest wine is a Cabernet Sauvignon lot which was planted 41 years ago. The average age of the vineyards is 30 years, ranging from the 5 year-old new blocks to the oldest ones planted in the 70’s.

Vinification

The grapes are hand selected from several vineyards that lie 1,050 meters above sea level. They are picked by hand and bunches and berries are carefully selected before destemming and crushing. Fermentation with wild yeast and maceration in stainless steel tanks follows for a period of at least 25 days at 25-27°C.

Ageing

After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels. The wine is then bottle aged for 6 months before release.

Tasting Notes

The nose is welcoming with red, black plum and vanilla aromas. The opening palate is inviting and powerful. Roundly tannic, full-bodied and delightfully alcoholic, the structure is well balanced with plum, blackberry and cracked peppercorn spice.

The Gran Mascota Malbec mid-palate remains upbeat with refreshing acidity, a velvety viscosity and refined hints of strawberry vanilla cola. Towards the close, one can detect an abundance of ripe blackberry, blueberry, crushed violet and damp forest floor. The finish is lengthy with some resounding notes of black cherry.

Analysis

Food Suggestions

Meat is obviously a must: Argentine “lechon asado” (roasted pork), spicy flank steak or peppercorn encrusted filet mignon are equally great pairing options.

Mexican food is also recommended given the spicy nature of the Gran Mascota Malbec: “Carne Tampiqueña” (marinated skirt steak enchilada with cheese, roasted tomato sauce and guacamole) is a superb option. Marinated steak fajitas with green bell pepper, tomato onion and spice accentuate the flavors in this Malbec perfectly. Apart from meat, chicken enchiladas or burritos in green mole sauce offer a great alternative.

Serving temperature: 16-18°C.

Cellar

It may be cellared for 5-6 years in bottles stored horizontally in cool, dark conditions. Gran Mascota Malbec is also ready to drink.
