About the Producer

The history of Cantina Goretti spans over four generations of the same family who passed the business down from father to son since its founding in the early 1900s. Throughout the 20th century and into the 21st, Cantina Goretti has maintained its reputation for quality, passion, and pride.

Today, the fourth generation of the Goretti family – represented by Sara and Giulia - is committed to the pursuit of quality, cutting-edge research and wine-making techniques, while also engaging in spreading the Umbrian culture and tradition around the world.

In addition to the historic Pila cantina in Perugia, home of the DOC Colli Perugini, the Goretti family founded “The Saracen Wall,” a modern winery in Montefalco. It specializes in the production of two important red wines: Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG and Rosso di Montefalco DOC.

Vineyard

The vineyards are situated in the Colli Perugini wine district and extend over a hilly, plentiful and sunny territory. The average altitude above sea level, is 330 metres. The Sagrantino vineyard is at 400 metres of altitude, in Pietrauta, near Montefalco. It has west-east exposure, on medium textured, limestone-clay. Density is 4000 plants/ha with a yield of 6 tons/ha.

Vinification

Harvest: early October, exclusively by hand and followed by strict selection on a sorter table. Grape selection begins in the vineyard - where the grapes ripening is strictly controlled - and continues in the winery, on the grading machine. Fermentation and maceration take place under scrupulous control.

Ageing

14 to 18 months in small barrels with a subsequent refining period of 12-14 months.

Tasting Notes

Colour: rich ruby-red with purple hues. Nose: deeply complex and layered: a touch of ripe red fruit highlights a rich core of black fruit such as blackberry, cherry and black currant, with spicy overtones of cocoa, vanilla, liquorice and cinnamon. On the palate it displays medium body with austere but warm and harmonious notes of coffee and tobacco.

Analysis

14% alcohol vol.
