About the Producer

Tasca D'Almerita has a rich history dating back to 1830 on the Regaleali Estate, which has become the symbol of wine-making excellence in Sicily: 200 years of history, all with “slow maturation.” With a focus on traditional values and traditions, the winery has expanded over time to cover 550 hectares. Five different estates scattered throughout Sicily were subsequently added. These estates include the Tascante estate on the slopes of Mount Etna, the Capofaro Estate on the hills of the Aeolian island of Salina, the Sallier de La Tour estate in Camporeale, and the Whitaker Estate on the Phoenician island of Mozia.

The Tasca family has always been dedicated to wine production, and they view it not only as a business success but as an ethical and environmentally sustainable pursuit. Their goal is to produce wine with the lowest possible environmental impact and preserve each ecosystem for future generations. The production of wine takes place on the different estates throughout Sicily, where vineyards are dedicated to producing Malvasia, Nerello Mascalese, Syrah, Grillo, Chardonnay, and Cabernet di Sicilia. Grillo has received particular recognition as one of the most outstanding wine varieties in the world, earning the prestigious 'Cantina dell'anno 2012' award from Gambero Rosso's 'Vini d'Italia' guide. The winery's constant attention to preserving the environment and its millenary traditions has led to its continued success and expansion.

The name of this wine is tied to the history of the Tasca family. A tribute to Richard Wagner, who in 1881 finished the third act of “Parsifal” in the gardens of Villa Tasca, inspired by the swans (cigno) that lived on the lake.

Vineyard

In 1830 the Tasca brothers purchased Tenuta Regaleali, a green oasis in the centre of Sicily in the county of Sclafani. The Regaleali estate spans nearly 600 hectares, with 12 types of soils and six hills between 450 and 850 above msl. It can be understood as an island unto itself, a unique land deserving of precise study. All wines come from a single vineyard or multiple vineyards but always within the same estate. The grapes are cultivated with the espalier system, at a density of 4,000 vines per Ha. and with the yield is of about 6.5 tons per hectare.

Vinification

Traditional red wine fermentation, lasting approximately 2 weeks at a temperature of 28°C.

Ageing

Full malolactic fermentation, then ageing for 14 months in 225 litres French oak barrels (Allier e Tronçais), 30% new, 70% second and third fill.

Tasting Notes

Intense ruby red. On the nose Tasca d'Almerita Cygnus has typical pepper and tomato leaf aromas of Cabernet Sauvignon blend to perfection with hints of blackberry and red mulberry, typical of Nero d'Avola. Their encounter also produces distinct balsamic notes, with undertones of chocolate and tobacco. On the palate, the entry is powerful and fruity, with a softly balanced acidity. On the follow up, hints of vanilla and more generally of toasting - due to its maturation in barrels – leave an impression of great character and complexity on the palate. Very persistent on the close.

Food Suggestions

Tasca d'Almerita Cygnus is excellent throughout the whole meal, it will pair to perfection with “Caponata”,( a Sicilian dish consisting of chopped fried aubergine and other vegetables, seasoned with olive oil, tomato sauce, celery, olives, and capers, in an sweet-sour sauce), cold cuts and salami, pasta all' Amatriciana (featuring a sauce of “guanciale” (salt-cured pork jowl), tomato, pecorino romano and chllies), cannelloni, roast lamb, medium-aged and hard cheeses.

Cellar

Ready to drink now, Tasca d'Almerita Cygnus will keep well for another 10 years if suitably cellared.
