About the Producer

The Belriguardo Charterhouse stands on the hills surrounding Siena, about 7 km from the city centre. The context is one of typically Tuscan beauty: a landscape where vines and olive trees alternate in an array of colours, creating the atmospheres that have traditionally earmarked this land as being perfectly suited to winegrowing.

The historical building of the Charterhouse (on which work began in around 1340 and was completed in 1347) is enhanced by a row of cypresses and stands at the entrance to the estate, on the slope overlooking Siena.

The first twelve monks settled at Belriguardo in 1348, as stated in the Papal Bull dispatched in that same year to the Bishop of Siena by Pope Clement VI from his exile in Avignon (France). The Cellar Registers on the other hand date back to the end of the 16th century and testify to the existence of a “bracelet pergola” and of an abundant and prestigious production of wine sold on the Siena market. There is written evidence of the existence of varieties such as “Moscatello”, “Rosso” and “Bianco di Clausura”. These time-honoured names, originally given to the wines made by the monks, have been partly revived to emphasize the close link between the estate’s present-day production and that of its historical past.

Vineyard

The estate occupies an area of about 75 hectares, 8 of which are cultivated as vineyards, in the Chianti delle Colline Senesi region, where the Sangiovese grape variety holds the role of undisputed protagonist. “Innno” is 100% Sangiovese, made without the use of chemical fertilisers and weed killers and with a very low content in sulphites. It aims to be an innovative wine while observing the Tuscany tradition for the production of Sangiovese, thanks to the union of two 100% Sangiovese wines produced from vineyards that are considerably different in terms of age and soil. “Innno” is the product of the meeting of two free spirits, Gianna Nannini and Oscar Farinetti. The perfectly central “N” on the label was taken from an autobiographical manuscript of Gianna’s paternal grandfather, Guido Nannini.

Vinification

The vinification and ageing processes take place initially in steel and then in concrete. This wine’s fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks for 6-8 days at a temperature of 24-25°C and is then followed by the malolactic fermentation.

Ageing

80% Sangiovese grapes are matured for 24 months in concrete tanks. 20% Sangiovese grapes are matured for 12 months in new barriques and 12 months in concrete tanks.

Fining takes place in June, followed by a long filtration. The wine then matures for 1 month and is bottled in September.

Tasting Notes

The colour is deep ruby-red wine with violet highlights. Its bouquet is perfumed with scents of violet, red fruit, plum and sour cherry. The same characteristics are reflected on the palate, which is complemented by persistent and harmonious tannins.
